In today’s competitive job market, finding meaningful employment can be a challenge for anyone. For older individuals with autism, this challenge can be even more daunting due to a lack of resources and understanding in many workplaces. Justin Moehn, an inspiring BlueSprig employee with autism, is on a mission to change this narrative. By hosting presentations and workshops, Justin is dedicated to providing valuable resources to help older individuals with autism build their resumes, prepare for job interviews, and develop networking skills.
Justin’s journey into working with older individuals with autism was driven by a gap he noticed. “There’s not much out there for older individuals with autism, and many are struggling to find work,” he explains. This realization inspired him to focus on creating and sharing resources that could bridge this gap.
Throughout his career, Justin has presented at several esteemed venues, including UT Health, Texana Cafe, SummerHouse, BNI, Monarch, and the Ark of Fort Bend. His sessions are tailored to address the unique challenges faced by older individuals with autism. A common challenge is the interview process. “Many don’t know what to say or do,” Justin shares. “It’s important to give them a chance, help them utilize their skills, learn how to sell themselves, understand what to wear, research company backgrounds, and do their homework.”
When it comes to building a strong resume, Justin advises focusing on accomplishments, afterschool activities, extracurriculars, volunteer hours, and personal goals, all while keeping the resume concise and to one page.
For those approaching job interviews, confidence is key. “Look good, feel good about yourself,” Justin suggests. “Show up 10-15 minutes early, practice through mock interviews, and utilize transition programs. Job coaches for juniors or seniors in high school can be extremely helpful.”
Networking, another crucial aspect of job-seeking, can be difficult for many people. In his presentations, Justin emphasizes the importance of platforms like LinkedIn, attending resource fairs, Facebook groups, and setting up vendor tables to increase visibility.
Justin Moehn’s work is making a significant difference in the lives of older individuals with autism, providing them with the tools and confidence they need to navigate the job market successfully. Through his dedication and insightful presentations, he’s opening doors and changing perceptions, one session at a time.
